CATL Unveils New Battery with 200 kWh Capacity, 15-Year Lifespan, and 1.5 Million Kilometer Durability

In a recent development, global electric vehicle battery producer, CATL, has introduced its latest battery type: the Tianxing-B, also known as Tectrans B or Tianxing Bus Edition, which is specially developed for electric buses. This impressive battery is noted to achieve a maximum energy density of 175 Wh/kg, thus setting a new record in the bus industry.

CATL Battery 15-Year Lifespan

Technical Specifications of the Tianxing-B Battery

The Tianxing-B battery offers excellent performance and cycle life simultaneously. In a claim typical of CATL, this battery is said to have a service life of up to an astonishing 15 years, and 1.5 million kilometers or approximately 930,000 miles. To build customers’ trust, CATL is providing the vehicles with a warranty for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 km (620,000 miles).

Technical Specifications of the Tianxing-B Battery

The lithium iron phosphate battery, Tianxing-B, is one of the key components in the battery system, and the IP69 waterproof level allows it to be submerged underwater for 72 hours without any impact on its performance.

CATL’s current commitment to the electric bus industry is evident in its plan to use the Tianxing-B battery in 80 different models of buses. Among the identified key customers, 13 have already signed cooperation agreements with the company; these include Dongfeng, Golden Dragon, and Yutong Bus.

While some refer to the Tianxing-B battery in its English name, CATL sometimes calls it the Tianxing Bus Edition or Tianxing B-series. Previously, the brand existed under the name Tianxing, and at the latest product presentation in Germany, CATL named it Tectrans.

The Tianxing-B battery belongs to CATL’s Tianxing brand, which was unveiled on July 4 targeting batteries for commercial electric vehicles. The first product produced under this brand was the Tianxing-L battery, which aimed at light commercial vehicles.

The long-range edition of Tianxing-L boasts even greater specifications of 200 kWh capacity, 200 Wh/kg energy density, and an 8-year or 800,000 km warranty. It also supports 4C fast charging, which can charge the battery to 60 percent or a state of charge (SoC) in only 12 minutes.

Future Outlook and Production Plans

Thus, CATL has an opportunity to dominate the global electric vehicle battery market; its market share in China alone constituted almost 50% throughout the first eight months of 2024. The company’s batteries are currently used in over 385,000 buses worldwide. Although the Tianxing-B battery itself offers higher specifications and more features than many other battery products, CATL has not revealed a specific timeline for mass production yet.

Nevertheless, the company has mentioned that it is going to start doing so soon. CATL’s launch of the Tianxing-B battery, along with the use of electric buses, is a breakthrough for both CATL and the electric bus industry. Featuring unrivaled energy density, a very long service life, and a high degree of reliability, this battery is all set to redefine the operation of electric buses.

Meanwhile, with the sustainable transportation revolution sweeping across the world, CATL’s Tianxing-B battery featured in electric vehicles is an inspiring example of technological advancement in the industry.
