Global Survey Finds 64% of Consumers Lean Toward EVs for Their Next Car

The TCS Future-Ready eMobility Study 2025 revealed that the world of EVs is set for radical change. Anupam Singhal, the industry head and President of Manufacturing at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), also stressed that the industry is now at a critical precipice, where issues like battery developments, intricate vehicle architecture, and production cost remain crucial.

Global Survey Finds 64% of Consumers Lean Toward EVs for Their Next Car

The survey at the Detroit Auto Show shows that 64% of respondents are ready to buy an EV as their next car. Such a shift in consumer preference is mainly brought about by matters of sustainability as well as cost factors. Most important of all, the desire level is substantially higher in the United States, as 72% of consumers showed a high level of interest in EVs, while just 31% of Japanese consumers did so. This shows that the level of EV uptick and people’s perception of green mobility remains uneven across regions.

One of the following suggestions learned from the above study reveals that 90% of the manufacturers polled in the study said that advances in battery technology would greatly benefit EVs in terms of their range and recharging rate. This is useful since it relates to electrical vehicles; that is, improvements to this technology enhance the basic design and electrics of the car, thus making it more attractive on the consumer end.

In addition, 55 percent of manufacturers are actively investing in research and development of battery technology innovation, and 78 percent are increasingly working on driving down the cost of the vehicle to make EVs affordable.

Challenges needed to overcome for EVs

However, the desire for battery-electric vehicles persists, and there are still challenges. According to the survey, manufacturers concerned that the lack of charging infrastructure remains the biggest market challenge reported it as being present in 74% of cases. This feeling was supported by 60% of consumers, who also pointed to a lack of adequate charging facilities as a major issue. Stable and efficient charging infrastructure is required for consumer trust and, subsequently, the improved take-up of EV technology.

The role also discovers the aspects of the charging infrastructure providers’ tendencies where 72% of them expect crucial mergers in the industry result of financial sustainability and scalability perspectives. When the business world is challenging to predict and where the search for the companies’ solid business model becomes a significant priority, cooperation and partnership will remain essential elements to consider.

Consumer expectation reveals a 41% autonomy level for EV on a single charge acceptable between 200-300 miles while 31% acceptable between 300-400 miles. These preferences suggest that range anxiety is still a decisive factor in consumer choices related to EV acquisition.

Furthermore, affordability is a motivator for EV adoption; 63% of the participants pointed toward achieving net zero and emission reductions as major factors shaping the promotion of EVs. This is in harmony with current tendencies observed in offering the world cleaner transport options and reflects buyers’ growing concern for the environment.

To overcome these challenges, TCS has set out its Future-Ready Mobility vision that can be achieved by AI & generative AI (Gen AI). Being an ecosystem of the best decision support and customer experiences, the intended work of TCS is to fast-track the global transition to electric and sustainable mobility.

Conclusion

Overall, the consumer interest in electric vehicles and technological development show the overall trend but the barriers within infrastructure and battery technologies deserve special attention.

However, the future of EM seems promising when stakeholders in the mobility value chain join forces to eliminate the observed challenges. The conclusions made by studying the experience of TCS also present a contemporary motivation of the market and reveal the critical role of innovativeness and strategic partnership in defining future transport development.
